Jacques Gorde

Jacques GORDE
a painter, witness to his generation

The artist

Born in Nîmes, France (in the southern region of provence) on December 4, 1943, Gorde began painting at th age of 12 under the guidance of a professor.
Living in an environment of trains and travel, he was quickly immersed in the "elsewhere" and with his palette was able to bring life into an imaginary world.

Gorde continued painting upto and throughtout his five years of studies at the school of "les Beaux Arts" in Nîmes; however, a long break of ten years would interrupt his pictorial journey until he returned in 1984.

A first exhibit at the artist's atelier was with much thanks due to J. Marie Lafarge, who has encouraged him with enthousiasm throughout the years.

The Art

The works of Jacques Gorde, situated among the neo-figuratives or "nouvelle-figuration", tends to, conspicuously with the years, lean toward the abstract.
Gorde refines his art; his colours evolve within and around his movement, and the large circular motion whitch characterizes it maintains its amplitude. His works is of his being; physical and of pure inspiration.

He projects his rebellions onto canvas, cardboard and paper, and leads us to the discovery of his intellectual and emotional relationship whith the world.

In the course of his exhibits, the various themes achieved by Gorde may differ but all remain rooted in a characteristic expression of movement, color and light.

The Themes

BULLFIGHTING : Born in Nîmes, Gorde was cradled to the rhythm of the "Féria". Like many artists, he is mesmerized by the ambiance of the bullfighting arena.

JAZZ : A lasting passion, Gorde loves to return to Jazz, where among the great he rediscovers a scent of adolescence.

SEASCAPES : Help him to remove himself from "reality", he is able to rest "he says, and escape, in order to better return".

ORIENTALS : Translate into color the artist's quest for the mysterious and the mystical.

URBAN CONCENTRATIONS : and their paradoxes of fascination and anxiety call out to Gorde.
